When most people think about orthodontics, they associate it with traditional braces. Orthodontics is a specialization in dentistry that focuses on correcting a bad bite. Traditional braces one tool that orthodontists could use to correct the bad bite; however, it’s not the only treatment option. While braces are used quite a bit in orthodontics, there are other devices and treatments that are better suited certain types of conditions. There are different types of bad bites (malocclusions) and treatment for each of them is dependent on the type of condition, severity of the condition, the age of the patient, and other factors. No matter what type a patient may have, a bad bite not only affects your smile but can cause a lot of other dental problems that can affect the quality of life. There are many common orthodontic problems that need to be corrected for this reason. Some of them include but are not limited to: openbites, underbites, and overbites. Our Staten Island Orthodontist practice, Graziano Orthodontics can help to correct any of these conditions.
An open bite is an insufficient vertical overlap of the teeth that is usually caused by bad oral habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting but can also be caused by the jaws not growing evenly. An openbite is corrected by modifying the jaw through braces, extrusion of the anterior teeth or in some cases through surgical procedures. The patient would also have to stop oral habits such as thumb sucking in order to facilitate the correction of the problem. An underbite is when the lower jaw protrudes upward and outward abnormally which causes it to overlap with the upper teeth. Although underbites and not as common as other types of bite problems the condition can cause many serious jaw problems and conditions. Therefore, it should not be left untreated. Underbites can cause: jaw pain, increased wear and tear on tooth enamel, an increased chance of gum disease, the structure of the face, mouth and smile to change, can lead to speech problems and low self-esteem. An underbite can take a long time to treat and treatment options depend on age and other factors. There are some devices that can be used on children in attempt to reverse the effects of the condition. Unfortunately surgery would be required on adults since the underbite is already skeletal at that point. An overbite is probably the most common type of orthodontic condition. An overbite is a condition in which the upper teeth overlap with the lower. It is a very noticeable condition and has some uncomfortable symptoms. It can cause difficulty with eating and over time can even cause headaches.
