Teen braces on Staten Island

A malocclusion, or crooked and uneven bite, is not only unsightly but can also hamper a person’s ability to eat and speak correctly, which can cause low self-esteem, a lack of confidence and even depression. This is particularly troubling during the teenage years when many children are extremely self-conscious to begin with and susceptible to the criticism of their peers. Teen braces on Staten Island are the remedy to malocclusions and may just brighten the child’s whole outlook.

Graziano Orthodontics has been offering teen braces on Staten Island for 37 years. Our practice doesn’t just treat teenagers we offer orthodontic services to younger children as well as adults. Traditionally, a child should be evaluated by an orthodontist at about age 11 or 12, although our practice recommends that a child of seven should be brought in for a consultation with our doctor to identify any problems and begin proactive interceptive orthodontics so that the process will be easier with less chance of tooth extractions during the teenage years. Whether or not the child has undergone the interceptive orthodontic phase at an earlier age most teen orthodontic treatments involve braces at some point. Traditional braces, which are still the most common orthodontic treatment, involve placing metal brackets on the teeth that are connected by archwires that apply varying degrees of tension onto the teeth to push them into their proper position over time. Our practice also uses invisible braces, which are made clear or tooth-colored ceramic material with clear plastic archwires so they are hard to detect.

As a substitute for teen braces on Staten Island our practice uses the Teen Invisalign System. Invisalign is a treatment for malocclusions that does not place brackets and wires on the teeth, instead Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic trays called aligners to straighten the teeth. The aligners are virtually invisible so no one will know your teenager is wearing them. Our doctor will conduct an evaluation to see if Invisalign is the right treatment option for your child and then discuss all the features of Invisalign and other treatment options with you in detail. He will then take a series of 3-D images of your child’s mouth, which Invisalign will use to create the custom series of aligners. Each aligner is worn 24 hours a day for about two weeks and is then replaced by the next aligner in the series. The aligners are removed for meals and tooth brushing, so your child can eat whatever they want. Bring your child into our office for a consultation with our doctor to ensure that their smile is straight and looks great.
